Abstract

The culture of different countries has been represented by the contestants of Miss Universe by using the so called national costumes. This article explores how certain aspects of Colombian culture have been showcased, specifically by those costumes inspired in pre-Columbian jewelry. The national costumes have revealed a better image of Colombia, different of what have been spread on other media. Although it is noteworthy how culture can be used as an advertising and political tool, this article reflects on the sexualization of culture, as well as on the commodification and commercialization of women’s bodies. The research is based on audiovisual files and press clippings.
