PETA's runway crashers seen through performance studies: analysis of an activist practice on the stages of the fashion industry

The main objective of this article is to investigate the performative characteristics of activist actions called runway crashers, in which defenders of a cause, in this case the defense of animal rights, occupy the catwalks during fashion events of great relevance. The scope of the analysis falls on the interventions carried out by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in September 2023. The theoretical-methodological approach adopted in this study is based on the principles of performance studies. In this way, the article explores not only the nature of the actions, but also examines how such demonstrations influence and contribute to the broader discourse on defending animal rights in the context of the fashion industry.
