Feminist design and the art of black women in Porto Alegre

Abstract

This article presents part of a research project that investigates how the creative process of black women artists in Porto Alegre contributes to feminist design, an approach that combines design practices with feminist principles. Based on a literature review on black feminism and feminist design, we mapped artists and conducted interviews with four of them. The responses reveal that, when informed by the epistemologies of black feminism, feminist design becomes a situated practice, connected to these women’s experiences and operating beyond academic spaces, emerging as a tool for resistance, reinvention, and social justice.
