Sewing dreams in the interweaving of professionalization, care networks, and the upcycling of post-consumer textile waste

Abstract

This research article reflects on the work of the Instituto Costurando Sonhos, an organization dedicated to the professional development of seamstresses from the Pa raisópolis community in São Paulo, Brazil. The study employs a qualitative methodolo gical approach, drawing upon bibliographic sources, documentary evidence, interviews, observation, and participant research. The Institute’s initiatives are analyzed through the lens of three interconnected pillars: 1) technical training in sewing skills, 2) the creation of a community care network, particularly for single mothers, and 3) the implementa tion of a business model centered on upcycling post-consumer textile waste from large corporations. The findings reveal inherent contradictions within the Institute’s actions, situated within a capitalist and patriarchal system. For instance, the upcycling process fa ces challenges due to its production time and cost, which clash with the market’s demand for faster and cheaper goods. This underscores the need for a comprehensive educational process to foster greater responsibility and commitment to sustainability. Additionally, the study identifies sewing as an ambivalent practice. On one hand, it can be seen as repro ducing the very capitalist and patriarchal structures that marginalize women. Conversely, it also serves as an instrument of empowerment, fostering trust, community care, and financial independence among the participants. In conclusion, the Instituto Costurando Sonhos emerges as an initiative at the forefront of the women’s movement, pursuing fi nancial autonomy, self-esteem, and a more ethical and sustainable fashion industry. Des pite the contradictions imposed by the systemic constraints, the Institute represents a perspective of resistance against prevailing paradigms, projecting alternative futures.
