Abstract

Fashion archives constitute a key point of intersection and comparison between the fashion fields of research, industry and communication. This paper discuss how archives have influenced fashion in terms of representation, historical understanding, and design since the early 21st century. After an introduction on the role of archives and their relationships with history and memory, the analysis focuses on the concept of “archivism” and the design practices based on re-using preform cultural materials. Such analysis draws on the research related to two teaching experiences carried out by the author in Italy between 2008 and 2012. The first, Dress Redux, at the University of Bologna; the second, Under the Cover, at the University IUAV of Venice.
