Taking the artistic communities in London in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a focus, this article aims to expose the social, political and economic conditions that allow an emergence of do-it-yourself practices in art and fashion. Identifying the central conjunctures of these changes in the English curriculum remodeling and in the social imaginary of risk, we will demonstrate how this generation incorporates another epistemology of creation that will reverberate in different symbolic and material orders, namely (i) in the reactivation of the East End; (ii) in the creation of artistic entrepreneurship; and, (iii) the rejuvenation of the capitalistic energies of culture, incorporating in the first decade of the new millennium a conversion of DIY practices into mainstream practices. Methodologically, we will use an extensive literature review as well as the application of a visual ethnography in order to constitute the material foundations that allow us to trace such concatenations.
